The First Chakra MULADHARA
The Root Chakra is the seat of the unconscious. This level of consciousness is characterized by basic, instinctive qualities aimed at survival, security, trust and self-defense.
Creation of the basis for the vital activity of the human physical body such as protection of our physical and mental health, as well as to meeting our basic needs is the domain of Muladhara.
The element associated with this chakra is Earth, so its energy is bound with feeling safe and grounded.
How often we think about roots of the plants when we are enjoying beautiful roses or picking some berries. Nevertheless, without the roots all this beautiful blooming and harvesting would be impossible.
The same rule describes human being spiritual growth: without developing the first Root chakra, called Muladhara, it is not possible, for example, to open your Heart - Anahata Chaskra; or Ajna Chakra – centre of our intuition.
Located at the base of the spine, the pelvic floor, and the first three vertebrae, the root chakra is responsible for your sense of safety and security.
When the Muladhara Chakra is awaken, we are able to work our way towards the light of knowledge and attain the fruit of Self-Realisation.
As it was mentioned above, the Root Chakra is the seat of the unconscious. All our fears “live” in our first chakra. All memories about wars, hunger or any disasters that threaten the survival of humanity, all of them are imprinted in the energy of the Muladhara Chakra. It can manifest itself as a fear of getting older, or fear to lose our beauty; our partners; our income or our health.
It is important to find the way to deal with it. The key here is recognising and illuminating it with the light of knowledge.
Ignoring it leads us to nuisance and misfortune. The wise regard all fears as valuable and beneficial experiences. When one learns from them and begins to work on him/herself, one makes progress in the spiritual development.
The colour assigned to the Muladhara Chakra is red. The colour means energy and vitality.
The Bija Mantra - Seed Mantra – of each chakra helps to release tensions in it, removes blockages, and activates its energy. The Bija Mantra of the Muladhara Chakra is LAM, the sound of spiritual awakening.
When this Chakra is in balance/unblocked it brings:
- The feeling of security
- Deep knowledge that all our basic needs can be addressed with ease
- The feeling of being grounded and centred
- The ability to be independent but at the same time committed
- Feeling of strength and vitality
On the level of the physical body, balanced chakra provides good digestion.
When Muladhara is imbalanced, it can manifest as a feeling of being:
- Angry
- Insecure
- Obsessed
- Possessive
On the level of the physical body, imbalanced chakra can manifest through the following symptoms: low energy, constipation, lower back pain, obesity.

- Meditation with LAM mantra - 5 - 21min.
- Meditation with affirmation
- I feel deeply rooted
- I feel safe and secure
- I am grounded, stable and standing on my own feet
- I’m peaceful, protected and secure
- I feel deeply rooted
- I trust in the goodness of life
Choose affirmation; meditate on it.
It means you repeat your affirmation a few times in the beginning and after you meditate, keeping your mind relaxed, free of thoughts. If any thoughts come to your mind, note them and let them go.
Another variation: silently repeat in your mind chosen affirmation throughout meditation. If you would get lost in your thoughts, note this and come back to affirmation again.
